Audi A5 and S5 Set for Geneva Debut

It’s official, the Audi A5 will most definitely debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March - confirmed by Audi AG boss Rupert Stadler in a roundtable discussion in Detroit a few weeks ago and the company just recently launched a microsite for the A5 (link below). That is good news, but even more interesting is confirmation via reliable sources within Audi that the company will go one step further with the additional launch of a hotter S-badged version dubbed S5.

The displayed computer-generated drawing of the S5 represents our best guess of what the S coupe will look like, complete with typical current design cues from other representatives within Audi’s S-car range.

This is the first time that Audi will debut an S-version of an offering alongside the basic A-badged version from the very beginning. In the past, S-cars have been launched at a later time to reinvigorate the model range. However, Audi seems emboldened and confident enough that it believes this sort of delayed introduction is unnecessary.



Both the A5 and S5 will benefit from being the first Audi offerings to utilize the company’s unique new longitudinal architecture, a component set that is highly scalable and slated for use in various degrees of size for the next-generation B, C and D chassis offerings. One key bragging point for the new architecture is placement of the engine further to the rear, allowing for improved weight distribution.

The S5 will likely differ from the A5 in the usual S-car ways. Sport seats, grey gauges, wheels, suspension, brakes and cosmetic enhancements, along with bold color offerings, will make the S5 easily differentiated from the A5 by the casual observer. However, under the hood will remain the most significant part of the formula. In the S5, Audi is expected to stick with their tried and true 4.2-liter V8 formula, though with a slight twist. B8-based S-cars will get the newer 4.2 FSI already shared with the A6, Q7 and A8.

The S5 will not get the higher-revving 4.2 FSI from the RS 4 and R8, but other less-confirmable rumors suggest Audi could pull out a card or two not seen before for this engine, such as the Valve-lift technology shown in the Roadjet concept, to bump the 4.2 FSI's engine power to about 390 hp.
